Must Haves for a Perfectly Primped and Polished Valentine’s Day

by Erica Jones February 11, 2013

When asked what my Valentine’s Day must have were, I had no idea! We are lucky if we can catch a meal at the local Olive Garden, let alone get dressed up and go out. Then I thought, how about I do something easy, something that would take the same amount of time as a regular look, but that had a little something extra. I feel as though when I’ve done something a little special, I feel more attractive, and whether he’s responding to the look or my feelings of attractiveness, I get a response from my honey.

I have been having a lack of confidence lately, as with the stress of grad school, I have been having significant hair loss (not fun or sexy, but true!) Luckily, about the time I’m having this very specific issue, L’Oreal comes out with a product for just that. The L’Oreal Paris Advanced Haircare Triple Resist Ultimate Strength Solution promises nourish hair and reduce hair loss due to breakage by 64%.

I love the smell of these products and that all three smell the same. The scent is not overly floral or fruity, but clean and not overpowering. The leave-in Treatment has a nozzle that allows you to get right into the roots and, to me, feels a little cooling. It also recommends that you massage the leave-in product into the scalp to encourage micro-circulation, which is a good tip for anyone suffering from hair loss.

After I get out of the shower, I put the leave-in product in and then pull my hair into a loose bun while I do my makeup. The makeup I chose for this look couldn’t be easier.

I started with my Revlon Colorstay Whipped Crème Makeup in 200 Sand Beige (my winter color,) which I chose because it applies like a dream, has wonderful staying power and doesn’t need powder to set it or keep it looking great through the night. I then used a brand new product, the Starlooks blush in Cuty Peach, which is the perfect peach for a sweet, sexy flush on the cheek. I then did my brows with my new favorite brow product, the Tarte emphasEYES Waterproof Amazonian clay brow mousse, which I applied with the SOHO eyeliner brush that is the perfect strait edge for getting a uniform and neat brow line. The best part of this look is the eye palette, which I discovered recently and absolutely fell in love with.

This is the Lorac Unzipped Eye Shadow Palette. I have been obsessed with putting a midtone shimmering shade all over the lid and blending a dark matte shade into the outer corner and deep crease, and this palette gave me so many options to do just that. For this look I used Unreal all over the lid, blended Unspoken through the crease and Untamed into the outer V and lower lashline for a smokier look.  I topped off the look with two coats of Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Mascara and Revlon Balm Stain in Honey. The finished look came out better than I hoped!

Finally, I took to the task of finishing my hair. I started by applying my Big Sexy Hair Root Pump to the roots of my damp hair and drying with a round brush. Then, employing a trick I learned from my stylist, Jacob Rodriguez at Alicia’s Salon who is Sexy Hair Demo Cut Certified and a Genius. He came back from a Sexy Hair event in LA with some awesome ideas, not the least of which was the return of an old friend from the 90’s – the crimper!

Jacob told me how another stylist had used the crimper at the roots of various sections to add body and from root to tip on strand sporadically as a sort of accessory.  The crimped pieces in between strait pieces look almost like when we were doing hair feathers, but cooler!

As you can see, the crimp really pulls the hair away from the scalp and adds body.

While the interspersed crimped pieces add variety of texture and looks amazing!  So here is the final look with hair an makeup!  I love how everything came together and it looks totally fresh, romantic and a little edgy!

A huge thanks again to Jacob for not only the cool hair idea but for the amazing color!

Boots for any Occasion!

by Remington Ready February 4, 2013

During the winter months, boots become a must-have closet staple. Lucky for us, long gone are the days of unflattering and clunky uniform winter boots. Whether it’s a warm and fuzzy slipper boot, a sleek leather motorcycle boot, or booties to wear out on the town, the options are endless! Boots are an item to invest in, while some trends may come and go most styles are here to stay. Here is a roundup of some of our favorite boots for this winter season.

The Classic: Black boots match just about everything, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. These are a must have in any closet – and a go-to most days of the week. Pair them with jeans, colored pants, or a flowing skirt! If you’re feeling really daring – go for the over the knee black boot to amp up your style.

Wellies: Every girl needs a pair of rain boots for those rainy mornings that seem impossible to get out of bed. No one wants wet or cold feet, and these rain boots just happen to be totally fashionable too!  Purchase a bright colored pair of wellies to lighten up even the dreariest of days (fuchsia or bright red are our favorites). Pair the bright colors with a subtle army jacket for a chic look.

Booties: Booties are completely on trend right now. For work or a night out, they can add the finishing touch to any outfit. Whether you like a little heel, or a flat, there are tons of options out there. The best part about booties is that they can be paired with anything: A mini-skirt, jeans, or even shorts!

The Winter Boot: A big winter boot is best for the days with freshly fallen snow or slush, and you just don’t want to ruin any of your other boots. They come in wide variety of styles these days, so these boots can be a fashion statement while keeping your toes warm and dry. Winter boots fit comfortably with leggings or skinny jeans – paired with your favorite puffy vest or peacoat.

What’s In My Makeup Bag

by Adina Zilberman January 28, 2013

If there is one question that I am always asked as both a makeup artist and beauty blogger, it’s what items I simply can’t leave my house without. From too many lipglosses, to the odd ball essentials, here are my purse must-haves.

L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Creme

Especially during these cold, dry months of winter, a great hand cream is a purse essential. I love L’Occitane’s original shea for its ability to leave my hands baby-smooth, supple, and ready to tackle whatever the weather may throw my way.

Murad Pomegranate SPF Moisturizer

No matter the season, two things that are essential to this visage of mine are hydration and spf protection. No matter that it isn’t hot out, and that I spend most of my day indoors, I need sun protection for this pale face, to not only protect against aging and sunspots, but also against those harmful rays of the sun.

Urban Decay 24/7 Liner in Perversion

If there is one cosmetic item I always have handy, it’s a great pencil eyeliner in blackest black. On those days when I want to go from work to play, a swipe of black liner is all it takes to get me party ready.

Hair Ties

When your hair is curly and near waist-length, as mine is, things can quickly get out of hand. Enter the classic hair tie, which becomes an invaluable tool in the fight against wayward strands.

Other items may come and go, but these are my tried and true purse staples.

Jewelry Organization 101

by Jennifer Jones January 21, 2013

Hi there! Jen from IHeart Organizing here today to share with you how I organize and store my jewelry, and provide some additional examples of other awesome jewelry storage ideas as well.

What girl doesn't love a little bling? It is the icing on the outfit and is how we finish off our style. However, if we don't have a little control over how we store our jewels, they can become damaged, ruined or lost.

The first thing I do that is super simple and works like a charm, is place an itty bitty dish on my nightstand. That way, when I go to bed at night, my wedding bands have a special home while I sleep, and are easy to find again the following morning.

For all of my other jewelry, I am a "have to see it to use it" kind of gal. So, I created a simple jewelry display above my dresser. The display allows me to see quickly, at a glance, what I have and what will work with the day's specific outfit.

To create the jewelry storage, I used a few simple frames and inserted special backings to display the jewelry.

For the necklaces, I used cork covered with fabric, which allows me to use push pins to hold the jewels.

By using pushpins, I can select the location and height of each piece, it's a very simple and versatile setup.

And for my earrings, I found this super fantastic sheet of cutout aluminum {from Home Depot}, which I cut down to size and popped into the frame.

I use this for my dangly earrings, and I love that I can always see what I have and make a quick choice in the morning when I am getting ready.

For the smaller bits such as stud earrings, extra backs and broaches, I use a ceramic egg tray.

And although I am not a big ring wearer, I do have a couple and found this charming white ceramic hand silhouette to be the perfect solution!

And last but not least, another dish, this one larger, is a great solution for extra bracelets and watches.

I scoured the web for some additional jewelry organization ideas and it seems that many others are fans of displaying their pretties as well.

There are many great tools on the market to help you get your jewelry in order, from jewelry trees to earing holders to the classic jewelry box. Or, you can get a little creative and repurpose everyday items such as ice cube trays, decorative dishes and muffin tins. And if a good DIY is what you love, updating picture frames and cutlery trays to display your goodies is a simple and effective option. The main thing to remember is to pair things down, only keep what you love and then keep it all divided. Jewelry can easily become mismatched, lost or tangled, so dividers are a necessity and giving every piece a home is the key.

Happy Organizing!

6 Tricks To Having Beautiful Hair

by Marta Tryshak January 14, 2013

Hair is typically one of the most remarkable features of any beautiful woman. And while it’s easy to believe models “are just born that way”, the reality is having beautiful hair is more science than art. There are many tricks every woman can use to have beautiful hair of her own, and to receive insights from a top professional I asked Master Colorist Rob Pizzuti for some of his “tricks to having beautiful hair”:

Trick #1 - WASH YOUR HAIR LESS. The best plan is to wash your hair only every 3rd day. The day after washing, just brush smooth and only blow dry what you must. And on the 2nd day brush thoroughly, and create a low ponytail or bun with your natural oils.

Trick #2 - If your hair is dirty, and you have a last minute party invitation or hot date – think braids! Braids look neater and more defined when your hair is a bit dirty (or if you use lots of product). And if you read fashion mags, braids are very stylish… and this is a great reason to save your hair from washing again and stripping it’s moisture. For a few braid style ideas, check out a video I recently collaborated with Dove Hair Care on “How to Tie a Boho-Braid”.

Trick #3 – With dry winter weather outside, and the heat turned up inside… deep moisturizing weekly treatments can be used EVERY time you wash. Start at the ends and stop at your eyebrow level so you still have volume.

Trick #4 - There are LOTS of “oils” on the market. Forget about the directions and think about this – oil and water do not mix. So, always apply a small amount of oil to your damp hair, not dry hair. This will lock in the water inside your hair and protect it better. Also, remember that oil will burn if it gets too hot, so turn down your hot tools!

Trick #5 - When you get your hair coloured ask about sealers, glosses or clear treatments. Usually 10-20 min and costing $20-$45, these treatments lock in your colour, moisture and seal all the tiny cracks on the outside layer of your hair. When done by a professional, the difference in hair quality and shine can be remarkable.

Trick #6 - Put a intensive mask in your hair before you do hot yoga or have a sauna at the gym after you work out. The heat will push the conditioner deeper into your hair for extreme results.

Thanks for the terrific advice Rob Pizzuti. Curious to hear from everyone, what are some of your favorite tricks for having beautiful hair?
